Protempis was named by Ussatchov (1968). It is not extant. Its type is Protempis antennata. It is the type genus of Protempididae.
It was assigned to Protempididae by Ussatchov (1968), Carpenter (1992) and Nagatomi and Yang (1998); and to Protempidinae by Mostovski (1999).
