Hybos was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Hybotidae.

It was assigned to Empididae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992); to Hybotini by Sinclair and Cumming (2006); and to Hybotinae by Wahlberg and Johanson (2018).
