Thinophilus was named by Wahlberg (1844). It is extant. It is the type genus of Thinophilinae.

It was assigned to Thinophilinae by Aldrich (1905); to Dolichopodidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Hydrophorinae by Pollet et al. (2004).
