Aframonius was named by Simons et al. (1995). It is not extant. Its type is Aframonius dieides.
It was assigned to Cercamoniinae by Simons et al. (1995) and Simons and Miller (1997); and to Caenopithecinae by Godinot (1998) and Seiffert et al. (2009).
