Taxonomy
Megalohyrax pygmaeus was named by Matsumoto (1921). Its type specimen is AMNH 14454, a skull (anterior part of a skull and associated right mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pachyhyrax pygmaeus by Meyer (1978); it was recombined as Thyrohyrax pygmaeus by Rasmussen and Simons (1988), Rasmussen and Gutiérrez (2010).
