Aptornis was named by Mantell (1848).

It was assigned to Rallidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Aptornithinae by Brodkorb (1967); and to Aptornithidae by Zittel (1890), Carroll (1988), Worthy (1997), Worthy and Grant-Mackie (2003), Worthy et al. (2011).
