Heliosaturnalis was named by Kozur and Mostler (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 754]. It is the type genus of Heliosaturnalinae.

It was assigned to Heliosaturnalinae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
