It was recombined as Megalohyrax championi by Whitworth (1954); it was recombined as Pachyhyrax championi by Meyer (1978) and Rasmussen and Simons (1988); it was recombined as Afrohyrax championi by Pickford (2004), Tsujikawa and Pickford (2006) and Rasmussen and Gutiérrez (2010).
