Hexalonche was named by Haeckel (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Hexalonchidae.

It was assigned to Hexalonchidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
