Taxonomy
Mergus cucullatus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Lophodytes.

It was recombined as Lophodytes cucullatus by Reichenbach (1853), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Clements et al. (2017).
