Mytilus leucophaeatus was named by Conrad (1831). It is extant.

It was recombined as Congeria leucophaeata by Richards (1952); it was misspelled as Mytilopsis leucophaneata by Miller (1983); it was recombined as Mytilopsis leucophaeata by Hendy et al. (2008).
