Tapejaridae was named by Kellner (1989).
It was reranked as the unranked clade Tapejaridae by Unwin and Lü (1997) and Unwin and Martill (2007); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Azhdarchoidea by Martill and Naish (2006).
It was assigned to Pterodactyloidea by Kellner (1989), Kellner and Campos (2002) and Wang and Zhou (2006); to Azhdarchoidea by Unwin and Lü (1997), Unwin (2003), Andres and Norell (2005) and Unwin and Martill (2007); to Tapejaroidea by Headden and Campos (2014); and to Azhdarchoidea by Lü et al. (2006), Lü et al. (2007) and Pegas et al. (2016).
