Sphenotrochus emarciatus was named by Duncan (1865). Its type locality is Muddy Creek (BMNH collection), which is in a Langhian marine marl in the Port Campbell Limestone Formation of Australia.
It was recombined as Idiotrochus emarciatus by Wells (1958).
