Samaropsis was named by Göppert (1864). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Samaropsis ulmiformis.
It was assigned to Cordaitanthales by Meyen (1984); to Cordaitales by Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Chandra and Tewari (1991); and to Coniferales by Ash (1999).
