Bassaricyon was named by Allen (1876). It is extant.

It was assigned to Procyonidae by Wortman and Matthew (1899), Palmer (1904), Hollister (2000); to Potosini by Baskin (2004); and to Procyonini by Koepfli et al. (2007).
