Taxonomy

Simia troglodytes was named by Blumenbach (1775). It is extant.

It was recombined as Pan troglodytes by International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1985) and Jones et al. (1996).

Subspecies

P. koolookamba, P. schweinfurthii (syn. Simia (Anthropopithecus) cottoni), P. troglodytes (syn. Troglodytes niger, Anthropopithecus ellioti, Troglodytes vellerosus), P. verus, Pithecus satyrus wurmbii

Synonyms

Simia satyrus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Pithecus satyrus by Owen (1853); it was recombined as Anthropopithecus satyrus by Thomas (1911); it was recombined as Pan satyrus by Schwartz (1929) and Coolidge (1933); it was considered a nomen nudum by International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1929); it was replaced with Pan troglodytes by Jones et al. (1996).
Pan africanus was named by Oken (1816). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pan troglodytes by Jones et al. (1996).
