Hexastylus was named by Haeckel (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr m R Sepkoski's reference number: ZR86]. It is extant. Its type is Acanthosphaera setosa. It is the type genus of Hexastylidae.
It was assigned to Hexastylidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
