Belemnosis was named by Edwards (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani-u T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 307]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Belemnosidae.
It was assigned to Belemnosinae by Kretzoi (1942); to Belemnoseidae by Jeletzky (1966); and to Sepiida by Sepkoski (2002).
