Taxonomy
Histiastrum was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala-l R]. It is not extant. Its type is Histiastrum quaternarium. It is the type genus of Histriastrinae.

It was assigned to Histriastrinae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
