Stenomylus tubutamensis

Taxonomy
Stenomylus tubutamensis was named by Ferrusquia-Villafranca (1990). Its type specimen is IGM 4002, a mandible (right mandibular fragment with the posterior part of m1 and m2-3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tubutama, which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in Mexico.

It was recombined as Stenomylus (Stenomylus) tubutamensis by Cassiliano (2008).

It differs from the other Stenomylus species, by being the smallest one, having the upper and lower first premolars isolated from the canines by a short diastema and from the second premolar by a much longer one; upper fourth premolar and first molar with almost not dis- cernible, slit-like fossettes and very faint styles; imbricated lower incisors and canine; the lo- wer molars have strong parastylids, and the entostylids projected posteriorly on the anterior border of the contiguous molar; the third lower molar has a very short (if any) accessory lobe; the ventral border of the horizontal rami is straight, with no trace of the prominence located close to the mental foramen seen in most of the other species.

Cassiliano 2010Compared to the other species of Stenomylus, Stenomylus tubutamensis is diagnosed by the follow- ing characters: smallest upper canine, smallest P1, shortest average C–P1 diastema, shortest average p1– p2 diastema, shortest average p2–p3 diastema, and narrow, slit-like lower molar fossettids.
