Nucinella was named by Wood (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett R]. It is extant. Its type is Pleurodon ovalis.
It was assigned to Solemyoida by Sepkoski (2002); to Manzanellidae by Cox et al. (1969), Vokes (1980), Woodring (1982), Vokes (1985), Lamprell and Healy (1998), Spencer et al. (2004), Mikkelsen (2006), Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012); and to Nucinellidae by Vokes (1966), Todd (2001), Glover and Taylor (2013), Kaim et al. (2014), Ros-Franch et al. (2014), Amano et al. (2019).
