Taxonomy
Halmaturus thor was named by De Vis (1895). Its type specimen is QM F3602, a mandible (right mandibular fragment with erupting premolar and M2-5), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Macropus (Notamacropus) thor by Dawson and Flannery (1985).
