Archaeospongoprunum helense was named by Blome (1984). Its type locality is Puale Bay Rads, 80AJM-8A, Alaska, which is in a Callovian/Callovian basinal (siliciclastic) lime mudstone/siltstone in the Shelikof Formation of Alaska.
