Taxonomy
Orthodesma was named by Hall and Whitfield (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1046]. Its type is Orthodesma rectum.

It was synonymized subjectively with Modiolopsis by Cox et al. (1969).

It was assigned to Modiomorphidae by Vokes (1980); and to Mytiloida by Sepkoski (2002).
