Protactus was named by Heer (1847). Its type is Protactus erichsonii. It is the type genus of Protactinae.
It was assigned to Staphylinidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Protactinae by Herman (2001), Bouchard et al. (2011), Chatzimanolis (2018).
