Pselaphus was named by Herbst (1791). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pselaphidae, Pselaphitae.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Herbst (1791) and Latreille (1796); to Pselaphii by Latreille (1802); to Pselaphidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Pselaphini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
