Taxonomy
Lucanus was named by Scopoli (1763). It is extant. It is the type genus of Lucaninae.
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Scopoli (1763), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776), Goeze (1777) and Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775) and Fabricius (1798); to Scarabaeides by Latreille (1802); to Lucanidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Lucanini by Bouchard et al. (2011).
