Hippopotamus imagunculus was named by Hopwood (1926). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Hexaprotodon imagunculus by Coryndon (1977), Weston (2000); it was recombined as Hexaprotodon imaguncula by Weston and Boisserie (2010).
