Taxonomy

Heterothemis was named by Handlirsch (1906).

It was assigned to Selenothemistidae by Cowley (1942); to Anisozygoptera by Handlirsch (1906), Carpenter (1992); to Odonata by Nel et al. (1993); and to Liassogomphidae by Ansorge (2004), Bechly (2018).

It was synonymized subjectively with Heterothemis by Ansorge (2004), Bechly (2018).

It was assigned to Liassogomphidae by Cowley (1942), Carpenter (1992), Etter and Kuhn (2000).
Gomphites was named by Handlirsch (1920).

It was replaced with Liassogomphus by Cowley (1934), Cowley (1942), Carpenter (1992), Nel et al. (1993); it was synonymized subjectively with Heterothemis by Bechly (2018).

It was assigned to Gomphitidae by Tillyard (1925); and to Gomphidae by Bode (1953).
Palaeogomphus was named by Handlirsch (1939). Its type is Heterophlebia propinqua.

It was replaced with Palaeogomphus by Cowley (1942); it was reranked as Gomphites (Palaeogomphus) by Bode (1953); it was synonymized subjectively with Heterothemis by Ansorge (2004), Bechly (2018).

It was assigned to Anisoptera by Handlirsch (1939); to Gomphites by Bode (1953); and to Liassogomphidae by Carpenter (1992), Nel et al. (1993).
Palaeogomphus was named by Cowley (1942). Its type is Heterophlebia propinqua.

It was synonymized objectively with Palaeogomphus by Clapham (2023).

It was assigned to Liassogomphidae by Cowley (1942).
