Bolitophilinae was named by Winnertz (1863). It is extant. Its type is Bolitophila.

It was reranked as the family Bolitophilidae by Kovalev (1986), Yeates et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Mycetophilidae by Johannsen (1909), Lewis (1969); to Mycetophiloidea by Kovalev (1986); and to Sciaroidea by Yeates et al. (2007).
