Taxonomy
Vrtula sama was named by Vršanský (2008). Its type specimen is PIN 36764/2216, a forewing (right forewing), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Shin-Khuduk (PIN collection 3664), which is in an Aptian lacustrine sandstone/marl in the Shinekhudag Formation of Mongolia.
