Mesolocustopsis problematica was named by Gorochov et al. (2006). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is MNEMG 1996.304, a tegmen, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Smokejacks Brickworks, which is in a Barremian pond claystone/siltstone in the Weald Clay Formation of the United Kingdom.
