Tchirkovaea was named by Zalessky (1931). Its type is Tchirkovaea guttata. It is the type genus of Tchirkovaeidae.
It was assigned to Diaphanopteridae by Rohdendorf (1961); and to Tchirkovaeidae by Sinitshenkova (1979), Carpenter (1992), Béthoux and Nel (2003).
