Gomphaeschna was named by Selys (1871). It is extant. It is the type genus of Gomphaeschninae, Gomphaeschnidae.
It was assigned to Aeshnidae by Carpenter (1992); to Gomphaeschnini by Nel et al. (1994); to Gomphaeschnidae by Madsen and Nel (1997); and to Gomphaeschninae by Pritykina (1977), Lewis (1988), Bechly et al. (2001), Schädel and Lechner (2017).
It was assigned to Aeshnidae by Carpenter (1992); to Gomphaeschnini by Nel et al. (1994); to Gomphaeschnidae by Madsen and Nel (1997); and to Gomphaeschninae by Pritykina (1977), Lewis (1988), Bechly et al. (2001), Schädel and Lechner (2017).
