Cretalloaeschna was named by Jarzembowski and Nel (1996). Its type is Cretalloaeschna cliffordae.

It was assigned to Aeshnidae by Jarzembowski and Nel (1996); and to Gomphaeschnidae by Bechly et al. (2001).
