Araripegomphus was named by Nel and Paicheler (1994). Its type is Araripegomphus cretacicus. It is the type genus of Araripegomphidae.
It was assigned to Gomphidae by Nel and Paicheler (1994); and to Araripegomphidae by Bechly (1998), Zheng et al. (2018), Nel and Ribeiro (2022).
