Taxonomy
Mesodesma was named by Deshayes [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Mesodesmatinae. 
It was assigned to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); to Mesodesmatidae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Mesodesmatinae by Glenn (1904), Vokes (1980), Signorelli and Carter (2016).
