Montacuta was named by Turton (1822) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Leptonidae by Glenn (1904); to Galeommatidae by Lamprell and Healy (1998); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Montacutidae by Vokes (1980), Marquet (2005), Bouchet et al. (2010).
