Taxonomy

Urogomphus was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type is Urogomphus giganteus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Martínez-Delclòs (1993).

It was assigned to Anisoptera by Carpenter (1992); and to Aeschnidiidae by Handlirsch (1906), Bechly (1998), Fleck and Nel (2003).
