Urogomphus giganteus
Taxonomy
Aeschna gigantea was named by Germar (1839). Its type specimen is BSPGM AS VII 791, an exoskeleton (complete female), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Solnhofen (BSPGM Munich coll), which is in a Tithonian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Solnhofen Formation of Germany. It is the type species of Urogomphus.
It was recombined as Anax giganteus by Hagen (1848), Hagen (1850); it was recombined as Anax gigantea by Hagen (1862); it was recombined as Estemoa gigantea by Deichmüller (1886); it was recombined as Aeschnidium giganteum by Kirby (1890); it was considered a nomen dubium by Nel and Martínez-Delclòs (1993); it was recombined as Urogomphus giganteus by Handlirsch (1906), Carpenter (1932), Schweigert et al. (1996), Bechly (1998).
