Cybocephalus was named by Erichson (1844). It is extant. It is the type genus of Cybocephalinae, Cybocephalini.

It was assigned to Cybocephalini by Kurochkin and Kirejtshuk (2010); and to Cybocephalidae by Park and Downing (2001) and Cline et al. (2014).
