Tarsophlebia was named by Hagen (1866). Its type is Tarsophlebia eximia. It is the type genus of Tarsophlebiidae.
It was assigned to Isophlebiidae by Ponomarenko (1985); and to Tarsophlebiidae by Handlirsch (1906), Martynov (1927), Jarzembowski (1990), Carpenter (1992), Nel et al. (1993), Fleck et al. (2004).
