Erichschmidtia was named by Pritykina (1968). Its type is Erichschmidtia nigrimontana. It is the type genus of Erichschmidtiidae.
It was assigned to Heterophlebiidae by Pritykina (1968); to Odonata by Nel et al. (1993); to Epiproctophora by Fleck et al. (2003); to Erichschmidtiidae by Bechly (2007); and to Heterophlebiidae by Carpenter (1992), Pritykina and Vassilenko (2014).
