Archithemis was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type is Archithemis brodiei.

It was assigned to Diastatommidae by Handlirsch (1906); to Archithemitinae by Martynov (1925); to Archithemistidae by Nel et al. (1993), Bechly (2007); and to Archithemistidae by Cowley (1942), Carpenter (1992), Kelly and Nel (2018).

G. Bechly 2007	a single row of very long and oblique crossveins in the postdiscoidal area of the hindwing (maybe a synapomorphy with † Isophlebioidea since also present in some † Campterophlebiidae, e.g. † Sogdophlebia, † Angaroneura, and † Sibirioneura amurica); IR2 originating on RP3/4.
