Taxonomy
Oxalaia was named by Kellner et al. (2011). Its type is Oxalaia quilombensis. It was considered monophyletic by Kellner et al. (2011).

It was synonymized subjectively with Spinosaurus by Smyth et al. (2020).

It was assigned to Spinosauridae by Candeiro et al. (2012); and to Spinosaurinae by Kellner et al. (2011), Arden et al. (2019), Malafaia et al. (2020) and Isasmendi et al. (2023).
