Oreopteron was named by Pritykina (1968). Its type is Oreopteron asiaticum. It is the type genus of Oreopteridae.
It was assigned to Oreopteridae by Carpenter (1992) and Nel et al. (1993); and to Asiopteridae by Bechly (1997).
