Asiopteron was named by Pritykina (1968). Its type is Asiopteron antiquum. It is the type genus of Asiopteridae.

It was assigned to Asiopteridae by Pritykina (1968), Carpenter (1992), Nel et al. (1993), Bechly (1997), Bechly (2007).
