Proinogomphus was named by Handlirsch (1939).

It was replaced with Proinogomphus by Cowley (1942), Bechly (2018).

It was assigned to Gomphidae by Bode (1953); and to Liassogomphidae by Carpenter (1992), Nel et al. (1993).
