Phlyctiderma was named by Dall (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant. Its type is Diplodonta semiaspera.

It was reranked as Diplodonta (Phlyctiderma) by Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012).

It was assigned to Ungulinidae by Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Todd (2001); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Diplodonta by Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012).
