Tricornidae was named by Blumenstengel (1965). Its type is Tricornina.

It was corrected as Tricorninidae by Crasquin-Soleau (1997), Liebau (2005).

It was assigned to Palaeocopida by Crasquin-Soleau (1997); to Tricorninoidea by Liebau (2005); and to Cytheroidea by Yuan and Crasquin-Soleau (2007).
